This is my 8 year old son Henry’s bedroom. You see this painting when you walk in the room. My husband and I found it at an antique mall and we knew it needed to go in Henry’s room! I think it might be one of those paint by numbers, ha! I think it sort of sets the tone and colors for the room, I like when there is something that does that for a room.

So, this is the smallest room in our house. Come take a look at this boy’s bedroom!

Bed

We thought it made sense to get a loft bed or bunk bed to make more room for playing. We settled on the IKEA KURA bed because he was still little at the time. I was too worried about the height of bunk beds. This also felt a little more flexible, and is even reversible. So far we have really liked it! Amazon has a similar option if you are interested in something not quite as high as a traditional bunk bed, and there are a few color choices!

The KURA bed has some fun accessories, we have the orange pocket which is super handy and the green pillow/curtain. We also have a blue tent that goes over the top, but lately he has wanted it down. We kind of mix things up! So, when we do have the tent up that wall doesn’t need anything, but when it is down I keep thinking about what to put up there. They have some fun new tents, and there are so many ways to “hack” and decorate this bed, but we have really enjoyed it the way it is and it just “goes” with all the things in his room to me.

Boy’s Bedroom Bedding

His bedding is a duvet from Pottery Barn. I bought it before he was even ready for a bed because I just loved the colors and it was just so “little boy.” This one is adorable as well! Turns out Henry never really was huge into vehicles and such, but is quite the animal lover. He still loves this bedding though, and it is extra comfortable, I’m not sure why. I actually tried to take it away because duvets can be a huge pain with kids. Especially sick kids…but he begged for it back and I can’t blame him. I am all about the quilts though! They are so much easier to clean and fit in the wash. They are also a lot easier for your kiddo to make their bed and have it actually look nice!

Oh, and don’t worry there are plenty of animals and nods to animals in his room :)!!!

See?! I could go on…

Another thing I changed a while ago was I got rid of their “top sheet” (actually I keep them folded in their linen closet). That was a huge game changer! Things look so much better, are easier to launder, and it was always kicked around or down to the bottom of the bed anyways. When the kids make their own beds it is so much simpler as well. I am not sure who I heard this from or where I read it, but I would have never thought to do that myself! I do like a top sheet for myself, though. It helps from needing to launder our duvet (since I hate that chore) as often! Both my kiddos have sheets that are microfiber from Target. I love them because they stay cool and they don’t wrinkle…because I don’t iron!

One more animal, his favorite.

Window

The best part about his room is he has a huge window then gets beautiful morning light. This curtain rod is from Target and I think it is a little more masculine. IKEA is a great place to get affordable long curtains, and that’s where these red ones are from. We had to hang the curtain rod again because, kids, so now I need to hem them, but I haven’t gotten to that because, kids. Red is my favorite color though so I really love them!

Lights

Henry’s favorite color is orange! The ceiling light is so bright and fun. I think adding light fixtures with a little personality is a neat way to make a room feel your own. These are Jack and Jill bedrooms, and the girls have the same fixture but in a bubble gum pink. I love that it is a way to tie them together but make them different as well. Changing a light fixture can add so much personality to a room. He also has a lamp on his desk, but sometimes I move it to other places in the house. I do things like that. Often. I like it in here right now, though! Another fun thing about this bed is we can hang fun lights underneath it for something festive and different. Right now, he has these cute bus string lights from his grandparents.

Desk Space

His desk is probably one of the most special pieces of furniture in this house to me. This was my GG’s desk that my grandparents gave me for my 10th birthday. It was a memory that has stayed with me in additional to all the memories I have from using the desk. I usually always had one drawer full of stationary and such because I loved to write letters, mostly to my grandparents! There was also a time when I had balloon animal making supplies, oh dear! Not the same kit I had as a kid, but it would make a fun little birthday present for a friend. Always so hard to think of ideas for gifts for friends because so many have so much, but I bet they won’t have this, ha!

Now, the desk often makes me mad because I open the drawers only to find huge messes! Or random pieces of things, things shoved in the back, etc. etc. etc.! But, hopefully after the nine millionth time we’ve gone through it he will start to be more organized…right? At least it is closed storage ;).

Boy’s Bedroom Wall Storage

One thing I added to his room to try to corral “the little stuff” was to hang these colorful buckets. IKEA has some similar type things you could use, but I ordered these from Walmart. Do you know “the little stuff” I am talking about? Is there more from a boy’s bedroom or girl’s bedroom? Probably a toss up…From birthday parties, holidays, school, the playground, and so forth? It can get out of hand, but sometimes it is so precious to them. So this is a fun way to keep things handy. We tend to sort objects by color because it just feels like you have to! And then, we TRY not to have too much elsewhere, but it is a constant battle. Do you have any favorite ways to deal with “the little stuff”?

We got Henry this giant bulletin board (similar) when he was graduating for Pre-K. I like the cork look with the woods for a boy’s bedroom and wanted the stuff on it to shine obviously! This is 3 feet by 4 feet. I went with such a large size because we have very tall ceilings, and some larger scale pieces usually help make the room feel more to scale over all.

We have been hanging things up on the space next to it as well lately just with colorful masking tape. I tried some clear acrylic shelves here, but ended up returning them. It just felt like too much. I had wanted to try shelves for a long time there. I am glad I finally did so I could stop thinking about it! It is so nice when you can return things. Sometimes you just need to see it in person and in place to know!

Bookshelves

Who doesn’t love these shelves from IKEA!? Target makes their own version now too. I like how theirs come in some different combinations like 3 by 3. Better Homes and Gardens has several options on Amazon as well. This one is very similar to mine and a pretty wood tone. They hold all his books, and also because they are a good 13 inches deep they also fit vinyls! We got Henry this record player for his 7th birthday. We have had the shelf vertical at times, but having the extra long shelf space is really convenient. There is a lot more room to display all the fun things a little boy’s bedroom should have!

Floorspace

The rug kind of helps tie all the colors, and there are a lot, in this room together. Remember, I love color!? Also remember, I can’t decide if this room needs one!? Anyways! I always love a rug in a room even if is carpeted. This one is perfect for a little boy’s bedroom. I think when he gets older it will be too youthful looking, but it was an IKEA budget rug. Always better when things are trendy, temporary, or you know your kiddos will outgrow to go the cheaper route! If you want to invest in a nicer rug definitely pick a pattern that can grow with them.

Henry also has a special rocking chair that was gifted to him as a baby (similar), and a Pottery Barn bean bag chair both of which are used all the time! It is nice that they can easily be moved around the room, especially since it is a small space. My sister recently ordered more beans to plump the bean bag up again and shared the second pack with us! So nice, and definitely gave it a second life if yours is looking a little limp.

Boy’s Bedroom Future Use

We don’t know if our boys will end up bunking together or not, but it’s nice to know we could just get a mattress for underneath and be good to go. Since they are our furthest apart, our bookends, it doesn’t make a ton of sense to me. Maybe for a couple years though? But, for now the little one is still in a crib, thank goodness! This little boy’s bedroom could also be my youngest son’s room and we could move Henry to a bigger room. The big three often all end up sleeping together these Covid days. For a while it was in Henry’s room! But, lately they’ve been in the girls room. With four young kids, who haven’t been champion sleepers it can sort of be like musical beds over here!

How do you feel about siblings sharing rooms and the different age gaps? Anybody have some good sleepers?!

Thanks for dropping in! We love Henry’s room and hope you enjoyed a little tour, and maybe got a few tips. There have been many times all six of us end up playing in here and it makes me laugh since it is our smallest room! Maybe it’s the hoop?

Henry says, Go Cowboys!

And Longhorns. Hook ‘Em.
