Big Boy Room Moody Mondays

I wanted to start a new weekly blog post called, Moody Mondays. This week I will feature the big boy room mood board for my littlest, Hank. Maybe it will actual brighten your mood if you have the Monday blues, though!

The Switch

So, Hank is currently in the biggest bedroom of our house. We think it makes more sense for the girls, who share a room, to move into there. That means we have a big switcheroo coming up in the near future. Always fun to me, how about you!? My kids don’t usually jump on board as enthusiastically. Change is hard.

Hank is already out of the crib, since he learned to climb out a “long, looooong time ago” as he would say. We finally got to use the crib converted to a toddler bed, and it has worked just fine for him and us. I’m not in a rush to get a big boy bed except it would be nice to lay with him and cuddle instead of sitting on the floor beside him, ha.

The reason I would like to make the switch sooner than later is because the girls’ room feels really tight. It will be nice for them to have a little more space, and maybe they will magically be able to keep their room cleaned up? Wishful thinking I’m sure.

The switch also won’t be too hard because we are going to keep the dressers in their existing rooms. I think both will work fine with the girls’ existing stuff, and my plan for Hank’s room.

Hank’s Big Boy Room

So, let’s get to it! I want Hank’s room to be able to grow with him a “long, looooong time.” I also want it to “go with” Henry’s big boy room that is the Jack and Jill to Hank’s future bedroom. So, the boys will have a bathroom between their rooms. But, I wouldn’t walk through there if I were you, not until I repaint it at least ;)! The plan is lots of different colors as the accent, and a black and white and dark wood base. Remember I have a thing for color? and rainbows :)! Henry’s is similar except he has lighter wood tones.

I will break down each piece in the mood board for you with what I am currently thinking. But moods change, so this may evolve ;).

Mirror

The mirror! A while ago I saw a fun DIY project that was too fun not to remember. I didn’t realize I needed a mirror for above his dresser until I started making this mood board. The girls already have a beautiful unique mirror, and I wanted the same shape/scale/vibe because I’ve really enjoyed that over their dresser that will soon be his. Their mirror will move with them to their new room. This seems confusing, stick with me.

So, I want to get a basic round mirror in that dark brown or bronze color family, but then I want to add something around it. Colorful, of course. Hopefully it turns out cute, and if it does I will post it for you! If it’s a flop I will fill you in still, no worries. I feel like round mirrors have been popular for a while now so I was just trying to get the best price for the look and size I wanted. This one is 34″. I was looking for 36″ but this is a good amount cheaper, and with my DIY plan its diameter will increase. It’s a kids room so I really don’t want a super expensive mirror.

Big Boy Room Bedding

I wish Target still had the little triangle quilts I have on the other kids’ beds, but it looks like they’ve moved onto squares, ha! I really like the idea of a black quilt for the base. But, since he is still little I wanted to have a bit of fun with the comforter. I think the lions are adorable, don’t you!? We are quite keen on animals at this house, thanks to our oldest, Henry. The lion comforter might not be something he grows with quite as long, but I am okay with that especially for the reasonable Target price! It might be a big boy room, but he’s still my baby!

I think I am going to order the full/queen size for both and forego the bed skirt. We will see how it looks and functions. I do not want a bedskirt so I hope it works, but I am wondering if getting the bigger size in only one of the two would work better, but I’m going to start with both oversized. We’ll see! Actually, I already changed my mind. They are on sale this week so I ordered both sizes in both and then I can play around with it, yay!

Curtains

Better Homes and Gardens Buffalo Plaid Semi-Sheer Back Tab Curtain Panel, 50" x 108", Black

I am so very excited for these curtains. I have wanted to incorporate buffalo check in our home somewhere for a very long time. There have been a lot of almosts. When I started thinking about his room it was one of my first thoughts, and for some reason I just love the idea of it in a fabric although there are a lot of other cute ways to incorporate it, even wallpaper!

These are SO affordable for that length. We have to have 108″ lengths for every window in this house, and it really limits your options assuming you don’t have an endless budget. These were in stock, but are currently out of stock so I am just going to keep my eye on them. Walmart is easy to return to and has a long return window so I will jump on it since they’re so affordable, and exactly what I want!

Hank’s current curtains are a light blueish greenish color and they go with the original baby/guest room I planned when I had Henry. They are blackout which is super nice. I would like to see if there is a way I can attach the new curtains to the blackout panels. Hank’s new room only has one small window though that doesn’t get a lot of light, so if it doesn’t look easy I will probably just try to sell them or give them to a friend.

Baskets

KLUNKA Laundry bag, white/black, 16 gallon

We actually already have two of these laundry baskets. They are from IKEA and have held up really well. I am a sucker for cute bins, fabric ones, etc. but they don’t always hold up to my kids sadly. These have and are super cheap, too! We keep all our dress up things in them, though, not laundry.

I stumbled across these ADORABLE felt bins from The Container Store on Instagram and I’m so mad! I can’t get them out of my head now. They would be too perfect to sit in front of the bookshelves, but they are not so cheap. I like the rainbow stripe of course, and the black one with the rainbow felt balls. So cute, I feel like the latter could be a DIY project too, but I don’t know that one is just so sweet. I can also picture our little wooden rainbow toy sitting bright and cheerful on these shelves!

Bookshelves for a Big Boy Room

HEMNES Bookcase, black-brown, 35 3/8x77 1/2 "

Storage is a big deal to me, I definitely want to have less stuff, but I have a lot of people! Nobody in my family seems to want to get on board with minimalism; I’m not a minimalist by any means, but I do find I spend a lot of time just dealing with “stuff” and that seems so silly. Our house is more than big enough to meet our needs, but I still find adding storage is always a good idea. If anything, it gives me somewhere to shove stuff until I can deal with it! When will that be???

Right now I am leaning towards getting 2 of these Hemnes bookshelves in the black brown. I would have them side by side and it would be a ton of space for display, books, baskets, etc. The dresser and small bookshelf in his room were my grandparents and are similar dark tones. I think it will all work together and still leave ample floor space for play. I think these are great pieces too that will help make his big boy room last longer as he grows up.

Big Boy Bed

Big boy room bed

I think this big boy bed is so playful, don’t you!? Perfect for a big boy room. I kind of love softer headboards, but let’s be honest…they wouldn’t stand a chance against The Hulk…I mean Hank. Hopefully this is indestructible. It has two heights, so the lower one will be nice for when he is younger. He isn’t far off the ground right now in his convertible crib toddler bed, and often ends up sleeping on the floor next to it. Certainly don’t want him too high, yet.

The higher height will be nice when he is bigger, and then I can store out of season clothes, too. I don’t need that right now, but as he gets bigger it will be helpful. There are a lot of drawers in my grandparent’s dresser, but they aren’t very deep. I could also store Henry’s off season clothes under it if needed. His closet is pretty small. I did recently grab some underbed storage for under the girls beds and am so happy I did! My favorite part is with Texas’ crazy weather its easy to get under there and unzip it to grab something if needed. I am also glad mine are clear so I can quickly see what is in there. I have a love hate relationship with storage that isn’t clear, if only my brain was better at remembering!

Walls

I think I will have to wait on wall art and such until I have most everything in place and assess. There is an art print currently in his room we bought before we had Henry that I kind of want to move back to his room and hang above the bookshelves above his bed. His room has had more changes too, I will have to update you on all that later. But we have really liked those shelves!

I did always picture big letters for his room since he was born, all caps. That could be cool above the bookshelves, HANK. Since our ceilings are tall, I might need something up there.

I would like to paint the room white for a blank canvas. That’s always one of my favorite things, but we haven’t painted much in this house. We need to start to though so we have a better way to clean the walls, the flat paint is just awful.

Other Pieces

Hank already has a cool light fixture that will work well with this mood board, yay! It is large scale, and white, and has a lot of texture.

His current rug is blue and seen its better days. I think I will live without a rug for a while, but I do love a rug in a space for more color and texture, even over carpeting. Maybe something will catch my eye.

He has a blue striped rocking chair that I think it might be time to part with which is bitter sweet for sure.

We will need to get a twin size mattress, considering the ones we bought for the girls. They have worked just fine, but we bought them for only $99 so I will have to look some more if prices have just gone up or what.

I already have two sets of twin size white sheets that came with the girls’ comforters. We will use those unless I come across something I’m crazy about.

What do you think!?

Do you like the plan? Are you dreaming up any mood boards for spaces in your home? A big boy room maybe even!? I do this all the time in my head, do you? It was fun to actually get it out and share it with you!
